Wednesday Wisdom: Subtle Changes

The last glimmer of orange light flickers in the sky as it sets beyond the white snowbanks. The sky is tinted from orange to light yellow to a soft blue, indicating the time of day. I almost forgot it was close to dinner time because the light outside was brighter. It’s funny how you don’t need a clock to tell the time if you know what it looks like out your window.
As winter inches toward spring, and I mean inches slowly, not in snow accumulation, although that is true after this weekend’s east coast blizzard, the air might not warm as quickly as we want, but the light shifts, reminding us another season is upon us in 25 days.
After two weeks of an intense stomach virus, my half-marathon training came to a halt. There was no strength to run, even though the Milano Cortano Olympians motivated me every second I watched them. Finally, yesterday, I looked up a new four-week half-marathon training plan to see if I could get in the miles before it begins.
The subtle changes in the number of running days per week, and the length of miles per run, were about what I thought they’d be – more intense and longer runs back-to-back, less spread out within the week, with some strength training to go along with them. I headed out the door yesterday to put in a six-mile run and test my body after two weeks of weakness.
I survived, but with more stops along the way. I kept telling myself, “It is okay, just keep going, stop as often as you need to. This is just a test, Tracy.” I calmed myself down, finished the six miles, and realized I wasn’t as tired or sore as I thought I’d be, giving myself another full week of training to make the decision to defer my bib to next year, or give it a try.
Sometimes, just as the light subtly extends our day, we can adapt to subtle changes in our business day, personal life, and goals to make an improvement. We don’t have to be overly dramatic about the shifts; just make them enough to catch up or keep going.
Today’s Wednesday Wisdom should inspire you to think about making subtle, not large, changes in your life as the light gives you more time to shine or work during the day. How could shifting something by a day, hour, or week make a difference, take off stress, and lighten the burden?
I hope you consider the answer and do something better for yourself by making subtle changes that give you a break or add a bit more sunshine to your day.
